Greenville Gay News for March 14, 2014 This Saturday, March 15th one of the highlights of the spring social season happens in Greenville as the Baptist Church holds its annual Men’s Wild Game Dinner. This year marks the seventeenth dinner that Jonathan has organized. Good food and a good time along with door prizes for every age, kid activities, and guest speaker Ken Smith. Former chaplain of the FSU, South Carolina, and Mississippi State football teams, Smith is on the national board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and he is an entertaining speaker. The Baptist Church provides all the side dishes but depends on its guests bringing the entrée or meat. Registration begins at 6 pm. Last weekend the Azalea Storytelling Festival saw a number of Greenville folks in LaGrange-an outstanding line up of nationally recognized storytellers will bring in the folks. Laughter, music, and memories of growing up are so well done at the three day event. Our Greenville American Legion Post has a new name-Franklin D. Roosevelt-Cecil Perkerson American Legion Post 186. The post held a Change of Command Ceremony as Buster McCoy, leading for ten years, passed the flag onto Dan Morgan. Toots Hobson decorated the legion for the dinner and ceremony with the head table placed in front of the door decorated with white, fluffy clouds and biplanes doing flyovers in Buster Poseys honor. The post honored World War II vets that were missed last Veteran’s Day-Bill Rook of Gay was one of those with a most fascinating story of his Navy years. Also recognized was Vernon Phillips for his membership of over sixty years! The post will have a Flag Retirement celebration on May 12th. It is a time for all those in the area to bring in their old, used flags to burn. Jim Mabon and Greenvilles Boys Scouts will do the honors for Post 186. Post 186 would like to invite vendors to set up in front of the post with their yard sale items the weekend of the Cotton Pickin’ Fair. Ideally this will catch on as a monthly event for local folks and the legion will have refreshments available. Our tourism connections remind us to vote for the USA Today Readers Choice Award-it ends Monday, March 31, 2014, at midnight. Go to their website and vote for Callaway Gardens as our favorite public garden. The Tourism Team will present its report and recommendations on the evening of May 6th - time yet to be determined, but the location will be the 3rd floor of the courthouse. This Sunday, March 16th the Banquet Hall of Alvaton will be having a Bridal Showcase. Last Sunday Toots and Ed Hobson and Anne Threadgill attended the performance of Les Miserables in Columbus. Ed said it was excellent. The community has been so worried and alarmed at the accident last week that happened to Bill Leveret. He has had surgery and is on the mend. He would smile to know how many people have been so concerned and asking about him. The LaGrange Symphony Orchestra held its spring concert last Tuesday and I do believe it was their most outstanding yet. They played a Dvorak piece, Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture, Weber and Sarasate pieces before finishing with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy. What made the concert great were two master performers joining the symphony. The Weber piece was made for the clarinet and Manuel Ramos, has proven to be one of the world’s leading clarinetists. The audience stood with ovation after ovation for Nadir Kashimov, a young violinist who has won all the competitions in Uzbekistan, Lithuania, Czech Republic, London, Spain, USA-you name it. Conductor Cobos explained that the young man’s violin, an 1828 Vuillaume, was purchased for him by the very wealthy Russian Roman Abramovich who owns the Chelsea Football Club. Money well spent as it was an outstanding performance. Super and Jessica Phillips are so excited to be expecting a baby. They make you smile just to watch them so happy. Andy Jesifers, in Aspen skiing, had the camera ready at the right moment and was photographed with Kevin Costner who paused for the shot at the Aspen airport. Alex Weather’s Zumba classes are filled with ladies toning up for swim suit season, cardiac health, and weight loss. It’s nice to see the New Year’s resolutions still in play. This Friday, March 14, is the Moonlight Ballroom Dance Club’s celebration of St. Paddy’s Day. The dance is in LaGrange at the LaFayette Christian School Gym, 1904 Hamilton Road. There will be a 7:30 pre-dance Tango lesson with Sally Estes, an Arthur Murray instructor. The dance is 8:00 – 10:30 p.m. and visiting couples are invited - $20 per couple.
