Greenville Gay News for September 6, 2013 Ibby Gabriel has been enjoying the company of her cousins Tom and Carol from Troy, Ohio this last week while Dan and Ros Gabriel and Ros’ father traveled to Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy for the wedding of Dan’s daughter Jennifer. Lt. Gabriel is chief weapon’s officer on one of our ships and the groom, Lt. Sam Rykaczewski is a Navy fighter pilot flying one of our latest F-7s and while at Annapolis was the brigade commander of the 4,000 students. The wedding was beautiful and the bride gorgeous, Ros says, while Dan says it was all phenomenal. The Gabriels enjoyed a suite in the Officers’ Quarters during their stay. The ceremony was complete with the crossed swords in front of the historic chapel where John Paul Jones rests. During the week in Maryland, Ros saw her daughter, brother and friends. The newlyweds will make their home in Norfolk, VA. Jennifer deploys in February or possibly sooner depending on the Syrian situation, Ibby says. The Gates and Williams Family Reunion on August 23rd was enjoyed by many. The food was especially good and the fellowship of the family members even better. The only way the reunion could have been more enjoyable was if the host, Danny Williams, of American Legion Post 186 had been able to attend. Unfortunately, Danny was in the VA Hospital due to health issues resulting from his service in Iraq as a member of the U. S. Army during the war. Everyone sends Danny their thanks and best wishes as they look forward to another wonderful family get-together next year. Our NPR radio station, WJSP in Warm Springs, has been getting much needed work done on the tower. If you notice that many mornings there is static, the workers are there replacing and improving for the future. They told me it will take a month for all the work to be done. Reception is pretty consistent in the afternoons and weekends though. The Together in Meriwether Committee of the County Chamber met last week and the plans for the “Expressions of Meriwether” event in October get better and better as well as bigger. Our seven cities will all be hosting activities that concur the weekend of Railroad Days and the Rotary Car Show and Geo-Caching event. Photography, pottery, tours of historic sights, and an interior design talk showing how light and color make dramatic differences in an historical residence will be the draw for Greenville. Jim Byce is sharing his beekeeping and honey making secrets as well as his award winning homing pigeons in Lone Oak. Pumpkin carving also will be in Lone Oak but teaching folks to make Southern biscuits and sweet potato pie is another feature that is sure to bring folks out. Award winning quilter JoAnn Camp is exhibiting her work in Gay-and the list goes on. The Senior Citizens Group in Luthersville will also be quilting and the Moonlight Beyond the Pines Ranch will be building bird houses and giving horse rides. Woodbury has a lot going on with its great antique shopping and tourism, but Blue Grass music and the restoration of several of the town’s historic buildings will also be featured. Warm Springs has the winery on tour, glass painting, and Sally Estes is feature the fun of ball room dancing specifically focusing on the swing and waltz. Manchester has more going on than all with the featured events that the county is piggy backing on to bring folks to Meriwether and explore our beautiful county: oil painting by the Art Guild, Photography by Christy Stevens, the President Theatre, plus Railroad days and the Car Show. Whew! The ladies of the Methodist Church in Greenville led the worship service Sunday leading the prayers, music, offering and service about immigration and the Bible. Many thanks to Hannah Flynn for organizing the day. Wednesday night activities resume on September 11th with suppers and Bible Study. The Lottie Moon 5K Run/Walk is coming soon. Give the Baptist Church a call for more information Tuesday is still the day that Jack Couch and Jim Byce and others work on the Habitat for Humanity house in Manchester. The walls are up! This Saturday, the 7th there will be a fish fry at the Dollar Store in Greenville with the profits going toward the Greenville recreation Committee. Many health and medical issues in our community: Kitten Garrett is in the hospital; Jim Mabon had knee replacement surgery Tuesday; Mary Anne Harman hip replacement; Kevin Banks is having a major surgery this weekend with a pretty intensive recovery time of about three months. Rob Estes is going strong and the family had a special day reuniting all the family at Sara Estes. It was great to see them all together and must have been fun because Sally Estes says more family reunions are being planned. College football season started and, wow what a day. UGA and Clemson eclipsed all games and was a slug fest that ended in ranking changes for both teams. The start of college ball seems like the week the leaves start to fall too and the raking and leaf blowing starts. If you have persimmon, pecan, black gum, walnut, redbud, and crepe myrtle your yard is littered. The weatherman is promising us a change in the weather with cooler temperatures-Friday night football players will appreciate that!
