Greenville Gay news for Novembers Doom 22nd, 2013 Sally Estes celebrated her birthday in style as she and Laura both took a holiday break and went to the mountains. They stayed in a cabin that was right on the river and they were able to enjoy a fire in the fireplace but leave the door open to hear the river gurgle. Surprise of surprises they ran into Merriman Harman while in Blue Ridge and she was having a mini break also. A lovely shower was held for Natalie Ganus Chaffin at Bethel Baptist Church Saturday the 9th. Her babies are due in early 2014 and will be named Troy Allen and Allie Audrey. Many thanks to those who purchased items from the historical society fundraiser. The hams and turkeys should be delivered this Friday and pickup is at the historical society during the afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Doug Hand, 72, who passed last Friday. We all have lots of special memories of Doug but the first that springs to my mind was when his boys and mine were playing little league baseball and he coached them, and called me to find a substitute dad for the game that day as he was in the hospital with the first of his heart problems. There were no dads available so I coached. I learned quickly that you don’t make two trips to the mound to encourage your pitcher! Sending a runner from second to home wasn’t the brightest coaching move either because they didn’t run that fast or clearly trust a mom coach. A special pat on the back goes out to coaches-it’s not an easy job. The Together in Meriwether committee of the Chamber met last week in Greenville with Chris Cannon, and our county has a very unique opportunity coming up in January-the state is investing about $50,000 in us as they will have a group here canvasing the county, identifying and inventorying our assets. They do this by attending dinners and listening at discussion groups in each community to get to know us better, and they will work out a plan for us that capitalizes on our strengths like our historical architecture, rural beauty, and quaint towns. The state people have helped cities do this before but never an entire county with seven municipalities, all with unique identities. Great reading out in time for the holidays: the third Bridget Jones book, a new John Grisham that is good reading, and the Southern king, Pat Conroy, continues his saga of the Great Santini.
