Greetings ACES members, I am excited about the things our association will be doing this year. We will be rolling out the new interactive ACES website soon that will provide member resources and opportunities to connect to Interest Networks and with other ACES members. As announced at ACA in Hawaii, we have established some new initiatives for our association to address in the coming year. We will be looking at initiatives to address our ACES Legacies, Supervision, Internationalization, and Teaching. Are you interested in being involved? We are looking for two members from each region to be part of a task force associated with the four initiatives. You need to be an ACES member in good standing to be eligible to participate in the development of these projects. The names will be gathered and sent to your Regional ACES Executive Committee for the final project team. Your commitment will include at a minimum, monthly online meetings with members of the project team. If you are interested in any of the projects please submit your interest through the following link: tinyurl/ACESProjects 1. ACES Legacy Project The purpose of the ACES Legacy Project is to construct a process to recognize those ACES members, past and present, who have made a significant and lasting impression on ACES or on the counselor education and supervision profession. Examples of those contributions may include: service to the profession that resulted in lasting change who have opened the doors of opportunity for other counselor educations and supervisors, pioneering initiatives to address institutional or geographical barriers to inclusion for contributions to tangible contributions to the profession (Codes of Ethics, Standards of Practice, Best Practice…) Demonstrate a far reaching impact, particularly those who have helped bring generations of counselors into the profession; Members of this project will work to further refine (or redefine) the criteria and make recommendations to the EC. Project team members will also construct a list of questions that will serve as the template for interviews of the selected ACES Legacy individuals. The anticipated outcome of this project will be material for the ACES website that includes a description of the individuals contributions and a video interview. Our hope and expectation would be to have a video interview of each individual recognized as a Legacy, which will help to chronicle the contributions they have made. 2. Supervision Initiative In light of ACES presidential initiative to connect with and better serve supervisors, ACES is forming a Supervision Initiative with hope that these professionals can come to see ACES as a professional home. We believe that an improved relationship will benefit both groups: ACES can help support supervisors in their important work, while supervisors can contribute to improved counselor and supervisor preparation. Charge: The Supervision Initiative will be charged with making recommendations to the Executive Board on ways to attract, serve, learn from, and retain site supervisors into ACES. We expect that this will involve a thorough needs assessment of supervisors across various fields (community mental health, school, etc.), and then based on that assessment, identifying ways that ACES can help meet those needs. The project team members will also recommend ways to integrate these professionals into the ACES professional community (i.e. conference program, interest networks, web-site resources, other member services) so that both groups will benefit from the strengthened relationship. 3. Internationalization Taskforce Internationalization Taskforce will be comprised of International students and faculty and U.S. students and faculty with the following charge: Identify historical and current ACES practices and policies regarding Internationalization. Develop ideas for connection, collaboration, and creation for International engagement. Identify challenges facing International students and faculty staying in U. S. and U. S. students and faculty in International settings. Implement International conversations at conferences and through electronic formats. 4. Teaching Taskforce In the spirit of advancing counselor education the ACES leadership is committed to identifying, implementing, and evaluating pedagogical practices that optimize the learning and preparation of competent counselors, supervisors, and counselor educators. Drawing on the vision of ACES Past President, Nicole Hill, the guiding charge to the for the Best Practices in Teaching Taskforce is to generate a set of best practice guidelines for teaching across work settings. The taskforce will identify, evaluate, and implement pedagogical practices that optimize the learning and preparation of competent counselors, supervisors, and counselor educators. Please submit your interest by Wednesday August 6, at 5:00 PM EST so we can distribute to the regions for their selection. We hope to have the project teams organized and announced by August 15, 2014. Respectfully, Marty Jencius President - Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Associate Professor of Counseling Kent State University [email protected]
