JOSH RAMOS / BASS PLAYER FOR RAMSEY LEWIS BAND NOW joshramos.weebly/bio.html ZARA ZAHARIEVA / VIOLINIST Born in Pleven Bulgaria, Zara Zaharieva began studying the violin at the age of three. She was exposed to a variety of music early on, from Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles to Johann Sebastian Bach and Mendelssohn. Zara attended the music school YOUTUBE / youtube/watch?v=TcJbtnH-qws#t=21 YOUTUBE / youtube/watch?v=5ESINgAyrz0 Panayot Pipkov in Pleven, learning classical music, sky diving and martial arts. At nineteen she moved to Chicago, where she attended DePaul University and Northern Illinois University. There she studied classical violin and jazz. Zara is an eclectic musician who draws from her rich Bulgarian musical heritage. She has shared the stage with Orbert Davis and The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and many other prominent jazz and latin jazz artists in the Chicago area. She is also a member of the music ministry at St. Sabina Church in Chicago. FRANK COLLAZO / GUITAR Frank has been in the music industry for 32 years, has worked with many musician and bands. He has been a band leader for the last 23 years now, also has studied with Joe Rumoro, Bobby Broom, Buddy Fambro, has done corporate gigs for Jewel Foods, Field Museum, and Shed Aquarium. Music influences are George Benson, Mike Stern, Robben Ford to name a few. EDWIN SANCHEZ / KEYBOARD Pianist Edwin Sanchez, a Chicagoan with Puerto Rican roots, grew up in Humboldt Park, where he absorbed a continual stream of Latin, soul and jazz from the radio and the neighborhood. As you can tell from these songs from his planned set list for the festival, he remains an impassioned collector of styles: Dizzy Gillespie’s “Manteca,” Michael Jackson’s “I Can’t Help It,” Kool and the Gang’s “Too Hot” and Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” You can also count on forays into Philadelphia soul and Detroit funk. But the Latin influence comes first. The Edwin Sanchez Project will include tenor saxophonist Robert Collaso, trombonist Raphael Crawford, singer-guitarist Johnny Martinez, bassist Robert Lovecchio, drummer and timbales player Brian Rivera, congas player Frankie Ocasio and singer-percussionist Joe Frau. ERIC JOHNSON / DRUMS Chicago native Eric Johnson has serious grooves the whole way around: from African and Latin polyrythms, to rock and r&b, to jazz, gospel and hip-hop, Eric’s power and finesse with all manifestations of the beat is exceptional. Maybe it’s all the time he has spent D Jing and collecting rare records, maybe it’s a by-product of his production talents, or maybe it’s just due to his Creole heritage, but whatever the source of Eric’s musical diversity, it has made him a much-in-demand participant in projects of multiple genres for a truly impressive array of artists, including Kanye West, Angie Stone, Dru Hill, Chingy, Pras (The Fugees), Jackie Dustin, The Pentecostals of Chicago Choir, The Turks & Caicos Mass Choir, and The Arkansas Mass Choir. It’s a simple as this: Eric rages on the drums, and he breathes a fiercely dynamic fire into the rhythms of Tycoon Dog (tycoondog), Christina Gaudet (gaudetband), Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping Gospel Choir (revbilly), and Turbine (turbinemusic). Eric also plays with Midnight Sun, X Factor finalist Terisa Griffin, American Idol finalist Angela Martin, and the Grammy winning artists, The Emotions.
