Greetings Brothers in Sigma! As we stand on the eve of our centennial celebration, I ponder what our most honorable founders would think of the progress we have made over the nearly 100 years since its inception. They stood in the face of radically different times that sought to compromise their manhood and their humanity. Still, they persevered and changed the game in how fraternities made their members and touched their communities. As "Gamechangers," they transformed their reality in a society that was forced to salute our manhood and honor African American humanity. It was a long time coming but society was transformed throughout the 20th Century and well into the 21st Century. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has stood up to the challenges of the moment and continue to serve as transformational figures in the society at large. We now have an opportunity to elect a transformative figure that will lead the fraternity into its second one hundred years. A young man who has stood up to the challenges of the moment—which for our fraternity has been the membership intake process and the vestiges of hazing—and has performed admirably, taking the brothers with him every step of the way. When brothers perform difficult tasks with diligence and competence, we should acknowledge that work. The truest test of a leader is that they can follow as well as lead. Brother Jonathan A. Mason, Sr. has passed his test with flying colors. His four years as our International First Vice President has been the most productive in recent memory. Bro. Mason has earned our trust, has earned our respect and has earned the opportunity to lead this fraternity. That’s why I am endorsing Brother Jonathan A. Mason, Sr. to be the next International of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. At a time when the forces of oppression threaten to turn back the clock on social justice and racial equality, we cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by internal strife and organizational division. We must transform our mindset if we are to transform our fraternity. We must have confidence that our leadership can navigate the challenges of the 21st Century and the realities of a changing society. I have the utmost confidence our present International First Vice President is prepared to lead us into our second century. He has used his tenure, as second-in-command, to prepare himself for this moment. We must come to our International Conclave ready to celebrate the legacy of our founders and determined to lay the groundwork for a transformative rebirth in the second 100 years. We must elect tried and true leadership, ready to lead and determined to “change the game” in a way that also takes us forward. Won’t you join me? I ask you to come to the Philadelphia Conclave committed to reclaim the “Inclusive We.” I ask you to reward leadership that has performed for you and embraced the challenges of progress. I ask you to join me in voting for Brother Jonathan A. Mason, Sr. as the 34th International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Fraternally, Honorable Brother Anthony Asadullah Samad, DSC #158, PLM #15 18th Western Regional Director, Author-March On, March Ye Mighty Host: The Comprehensive History of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
