Greetings! Curt has made me (Amy) an admin and has asked me to post science stuff, so I thought I would stat with this article about Survival of the Kindest. Darwin knew that cooperative communities would survive better than selfish ones but he didnt understand the mechanism by which these traits were passed down, scientists are now starting to understand these mechanisms. Excerpt: Because of our very vulnerable offspring, the fundamental task for human survival and gene replication is to take care of others, said Keltner, co-director of UC Berkeleys Greater Good Science Center. Human beings have survived as a species because we have evolved the capacities to care for those in need and to cooperate. As Darwin long ago surmised, sympathy is our strongest instinct.
