Greetings Destroyers With the most hectic commercial time of the year descending on us (for those of us who celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa by exchanging gifts), more and more people are wondering what alternatives there are for young girls who arent interested in pink toy kitchen appliances or teasets. One answer is GoldieBlox, an interactive book series and construction game designed by CEO and Stanford engineer Debbie Sterling, to combine the type of character-based stories that girls love with the engineering aspects of toys more typically marketed to boys, like Lego. The GoldieBlox website states that only 11 percent of engineers across the globe are female; Ms Sterlings aim is to “disrupt the pink aisle and inspire the future generation of female engineers. The lyrics, sung by girls themselves, include: Its time to change! We deserve to see a range, cos all our toys look just the same, and we would like to use our brains. We are all more than princess maids... According to a recent update on junkee, Goldieblox may soon be available in Australia - possibly even before Christmas. junkee/can-somebody-please-bring-goldieblox-to-australia-thanks/23895 And heres some more great engineering career inspiration for older girls: girlsrisenet.org/engineering/for-girls-only Destroyers, do you know of any other gender stereotype-busting games like GoldieBlox? If you could invent one, what would it be?
