Greetings Friends, I pray you all are well. This past Wednesday at Little Rock AMEZ Church the local NAACP hosted the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). The CIW is a group of organizers from Immokalee, Florida who are on a tour of the South to share the story of their successful efforts to get McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and several other national chains to support the rights of their workers. The group consisted of several immigrant farm workers from the fields who have become organizers and a handful of “professionals” only moments removed from university campuses who have been able to encourage major international corporations to pay an extra penny per pound for tomatoes, which is eventually passed back to their workers. Theirs is the classic David and Goliath tale that demonstrates that even today incredible victories against outrageous odds are possible. The occasion reminded each of us at the table who are working to reclaim North Carolina from the immoral and extreme policies that are coming from our GA and Governor’s Mansion that no matter how impossible victory may seem, as we work for justice with faith in God, all things really are possible! Today I want to let you know about a town hall meeting this upcoming Monday, September 30th, at 7 pm at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church (1401 Allen Street, Charlotte). At this town hall gathering, we will be discussing concerns about the Jonathan Ferrell shooting in Charlotte, interactions between the CMPD and citizens, and matters surrounding these issues. This would be a wonderful opportunity for clergy to come and discuss ways to prevent such negative encounters between police and citizens of color in the future and to forge a way forward together in these contentious times. I pray that all of you in the region will come to and participate in the town hall meeting on Monday evening! Thank you again for all that you have been doing with the Forward Together Movement as we try to bear witness to God’s will and God’s word in this particularly perilous period. God’s Grace and Peace, Rodney S. Sadler, Jr., Ph.D.
