Greetings, Mi gente! Im new to this forum (not congas) and wanted to add the steps Im doing to change the color on my LP Classics. They arent vintage but I know many of you guys work on repairs. This is what has worked for me step by step. After removing all hardware. 1. 120 sandpaper to remove gloss. By hand. Came off in 10 minutes. 2. Removed dust with paper towel. 3. 220 sandpaper for 30 seconds. 4. Applied black wood stain with sponge brush. Did NOT wipe off excess. I was really liking the look. 5. Set by some space heaters on medium. About 8-10inches away. Cooked overnight. 6. Woke up and sanded very lightly w/direction of grain to gray out the black a bit with 320 sandpaper. Literally no more than 2 extremely light up strokes (bottom up). 7. Dyed the cuero with black leather dye from Michaels. With a shirt. Circular motion. One coat only. 8. Set those by heater as well. So far all they need is a finish to lock it in, although the stain dried on conga feels similar to my old acuna gon bops. Tempted to leave them as is. Peace and love!
