Greetings Pilgrims, This is the time of year for planning the 2015 Camino so Im going to do a series of posts based on our walk last May from Sahagun to Santiago, about 220 miles. What worked for me may not be best for you, but I hope to stimulate with some contrarian ideas. The first is slow down. Walk shorter distances. Take naps. Alright we were a group of old people: three in our 60s, one in 70s so we needed to take it easy. We figured about 10 miles a day was achievable since we were not experienced hikers and didnt bother getting in shape for the Camino. We actually walked between 9 and 13 miles each day and it was perfect. We usually left the albergue about 8am, one of the last to leave, walked an hour or two, had a café or orange juice and snck, walked some more, took a break, walked a little more then had lunch, picnic or restaurant. If a nice field was nearby after lunch we often, not always, took a half hour nap. Then we would walk for a couple more hours. We usually reached our albergue between 2pm to 4pm and stopped for the day. Advantage to stopping early? Albergues were not full so a good choice of beds (we were never the first ones there though). Plenty of hot water left in the showers. Still room on the clothesline and enough sunshine left to dry your clothes. Best of all - time for a cup of tea to relax and talk with other pilgrims. We also had time to explore the town or village WITHOUT A PACK. You are traveling thousands of miles to walk the Camino not to finish the walk as soon as you can.
