Greetings, The COMET Program is pleased to announce the publication of three new lessons. Caribbean Radar Products provides examples of radar imagery from various locations in the Caribbean to demonstrate the different types of images available. Also, examples of different meteorological and non-meteorological features are presented to show features seen in island locations. This 0.5-hour lesson is designed to provide a familiarity of the data used in forecasting for locations in the Caribbean. Please follow this link to the MetEd description page that provides additional information and a link to begin the lesson https://meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=1021 A fourth case study, Hurricane Georges has been added to “Caribbean Radar Cases.” The case focuses on the storm as it moved over the islands of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola on 21-22 September 1998. The case study highlights the importance of radar imagery in diagnosing the intensity of convective rainfall and the effects of terrain. The availability of radar data from research aircraft provides a more detailed view of the reflectivity and wind fields induced by complex terrain over Hispaniola. The case study may be accessed from https://meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=968 Tropical Fog: A Look at Fog That Impacts Aviation in Guyana is a 1-hour lesson that reviews the physical processes that lead to the main types of fog that form in the area. A specific fog event is analyzed to identify the conditions in the region that lead to fog development and dissipation. Surface observations, river water temperatures, and satellite products are used to categorize the fog type and precursor conditions. This link provides additional information and a link to begin the lesson https://meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=1007 The intended audience for these lessons is made up of people interested in operational forecasting in the Caribbean. They should also appeal to students and members of the general public with an interest in the Caribbean. All COMET lessons and the MetEd website rely on JavaScript, and some lessons rely on Adobe® Flash® for navigation, animation, and/or presentation of multimedia elements. Ensure that you have a browser updated to its latest version with JavaScript enabled and the latest version of the Adobe FlashPlayer installed (get.adobe/flashplayer/).
