Greetings! There’s just two weeks to go before the start of “Online Games: Literature, New Media, and Narrative.” We’ve been working night and day (no exaggeration) to put the finishing touches on the course. I have a great team of videographers, editors, TAs, and a first-year medical student with a real gift for drawing cool game characters—I can’t thank them enough. Today we wrapped up a gameplay session in the Chamber of Mazarbul deep in the Mines of Moria, where six of us found ourselves trapped by hordes of orcs, goblins, and trolls, just like Frodo and the Fellowship in Tolkien’s novel. I spent the entire battle talking about how our encounter compared with the novel and movie. Luckily, my companions were talented players who completed the quest with only sporadic help from their leader. In other developments, we started this Facebook page and a Twitter account @gamemooc for the course. Please like our Facebook page and start Tweeting about the class. Our course goes live on Monday, September 9, 2013. I look forward to seeing you online! Jay Clayton P.S. One of your classmates, Bob Cruse, told me about a better online version of Robert Browning’s “Childe Roland To the Dark Tower Came.” I suggest you go to the University of Toronto Libraries’ archive, “Representative Poetry Online,” where you will find really helpful notes on the poem (rpo.library.utoronto.ca/poems/childe-roland-dark-tower-came). You might also want to listen to this YouTube recording of the poem: sometimes poetry seems easier to understand when you hear it read out loud (youtube/watch?v=TmIT0RFmwYA).
