Greetings! Today was a changeable but uneventful day. The weather was changeable: this morning was cloudy, and rain was predicted, although it never materialized yet here. This afternoon was sunny and humid. Of course I went for a walk this morning, and after that my day settled into the normal routine of little things. Here’s a word for today: DEATH AND BURIAL OF ABRAHAM This is the sum of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years. Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife. And it came to pass, after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac. And Isaac dwelt at Beer Lahai Roi. Genesis 25:7-11 Abraham lived 175 years. He had come from a pagan life in Ur when God called him. Then, in partial obedience he went to Haran. Finally, trusting God, he set out for Canaan, where God blessed him immensely, his faith grew, he was given a promised son in his old age, and that son, Isaac, grew into a man, and married Rebekah. So, in the end, it could be said of him, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” (Hebrews 11:8-10) At Abraham’s death, Isaac and Ishmael were reunited, and together they buried him in the cave at Machpelah, beside his wife, Sarah. And apparently the two sons went their separate ways. Not much more is written of Ishmael, although his descendants played and still play an important role in history. Isaac, on the other hand, prospered, and the line of the Promised Redeemer was passed down through him.
