Greetings, everyone. My name is Jay and Im the administrator. I wanted to give you a little background about myself and this group so everyone has a basic understanding of whats going on here. Lets start off by laying down a foundation. Im guessing if youre here, you already understand what alternative history is. If not, the basic definition is that it is a genre of fiction in which it is speculated how the course of history might have been altered if a particular historical event had had a different outcome. In this case, what if the Roman Empire fell later than it did, or it never fell at all. We then want to capture the look and feel of that alternative timeline by imagining, creating and crafting costumes that might exist in that time. There probably are as many alternative ideas for what it would have taken for the Roman Empire to sustain itself over time as there are people thinking about it. In that vein, it is not my goal to say what is right and what is wrong. No single timeline will be considered canon. The only thing is, if you want to do a costume in this genre, you should probably think about what area of the world Rome occupied at that point in time and what cultural and level of technological sophistication you would like to portray. For example, my costume is that of a centurion from the Praetorian Guard, the elite guardians of the Emperor of Rome, but from a time period where material science and technology progressed without the interruption of the Dark Ages. It is a re-visioned late 13th Century, when Mongol hordes were pressuring the eastern boundaries of an empire stretching into what is now Belarus and Ukraine and the empire is led by the Empress Octavia. There is room for any type of costume you can think of. One doesnt have to be limited to a soldier, like mine. One could choose to portray a Roman politician, a merchant, commoner or even slave (if your history includes them). One could even imagine what an enemy of Rome from this history would look like. One could go with a traditional, historically accurate look or go completely steampunk. The only thing it would need to be is something obviously Roman.
