Greetings from Berlin! Today is my fifth full day here for my residency with the fine folks at idrawalot. To say Berlin has a lot to take in would be an understatement. The city buzzes 24/7 but in the most chill way imaginable, if that makes any sense. My hosts have been kind to offer a running list of activities, but are also understanding when I just want to stay glued to a canvas for hours. I have finished one painting here, the first of a subgroup of paintings on suburban rituals that will show at Hooloon Gallery in Philadelphia in July. The title of this new painting is: In the Johnson’s home most of the family activities were repurposed as feats of strength competitions in which the three johnson boys & their sister vied for their parent’s attention with practiced brutality even birthday pinatas were test of savagery with Mr.Johnson spitting venom from his lazy boy A few days ago Adrian took me to see the opening of Johannes Mundinger and Sophia-Louise Hirsch’s “Claims and Tales” at Eichblatt Gallery. The work was wonderfully inspiring – big expressive figurative paintings that were totally wild and intriguing. Also met enough talented people in one night to make me wonder what’s in the water here, or beer rather. Today I ventured out solo and walked to Gipsstraße to see a group exhibit at Circle Culture Gallery. I didn’t take any photos of the many and varied breasts, vaginas, and pig parts in the show but I did snap some touristy photos along the way. And I didn’t get lost once! Okay I got lost once. Definitely not more than twice. Tomorrow is a studio visit to English bad ass Dave the Chimp, whose painted beans are a fixture around town. Today I started a new painting of another suburban ritual: redecorating. xox - Andrea andrea-joyce/
