Greetings from New England! I was referred to this group by a member on Expedition Portal so I decided to join in and share my story and hopefully meet some new people and make some like minded friends in the Rover community. Ive been an enthusiast since 2011 when I purchased my first Green Oval: one 1998 Discovery 1. Drove it for over a year but past abuse from its previous owners really did a number on her. Had to retire the poor girl when I concluded it was beyond my capabilities to keep her street legal. Rust in the wheel wells, rusted fuel lines, engine misfires, check engine light, abs light, SRS light, sagging suspension, interior gutted, headlights replaced with half ass hids and finally the steering wheel shaft snapped. Still she was a beauty and I enjoyed the time I spent with her. Learned alot, met some awesome people and became a very active member of the LR community all thanks to her! Took a break for awhile and bought a nice Saab 9-5 Wagon. Loved it but it just wasnt a Land Rover. I missed the command seating, the distinctive shape and the classic cues of the Discovery. I missed the AWD and the CDL capabilities. Living in New England is probably not much better than life in Alaska. Almost as much snow and almost as cold. So searched and searched for another Disco, this time a bigger more modern Discovery 2. After a long fruitless search I finally found something I could get. A 2004 Discovery 2 SE Trail Edition with the cold climate package. Most all the bells and whistles save ACE, navigation and rear sensors. Purchased her with 130k on the clock in late 2012 and Ive had her ever since. Today she has 147k and counting. Still my daily driver and slowly she is becoming my dream expedition overland vehicle. Ive invested alot into her and soon all my hard work and investments will be tested. Back in 2012 I took a seasonal job at a seafood processing plant in Seward Alaska. Lived and worked up there for maybe 6 or 7 months, loved everything about it. I returned to New England to wrench on my Disco (having spent a small fortune on new stuff for her while i was in AK) and vowed that one day I would return to AK. So after careful consideration Ive decided to make an ambitious goal for myself. Deck out the truck as much as possible, service anything that needs to be addressed, pack up my possessions, leave my job and make my way north-west in my Disco. A 4,750 mile overland trip across the country and through Canada. I will be departing in early-mid April 2015 in my Disco and roughly 2 weeks thereafter I should arrive in Seward AK where I will continue as a seafood processor and start a new life in Americas last frontier. Living the dream with my beloved Disco. I hope to get to know some of you along the way and perhaps some of us will meet up sometime, share stories and do some overlanding together.
