Greetings from Portland, comrades! Its Wednesday, December 17. Our local weather is lightly dampish with highs near 50; the word is that the weekend could be quite rainy, with a dry spell returning by Tuesday. The news so far is thankfully atrocity-free, pretty much. So far. Locally we have a guy who pitched four pipe bombs out the window of his 2002 Honda Civic in southeast Portland, then eluded police. Oregon now has a pot czar, a bow-tied, wine-drinking, career state employee named Tom Burns, who will be paid $101 K for overseeing the rules and expectations for the recreational marijuana industry that will take form in the state over the next year. Not a partaker himself, at least not since college, he knows his weed--hes currently the director the state medical MJ program. A Portland Nordstroms sales associate lost his job but has gained world attention for suggesting on Facebook that a white cop should be killed for every black man who dies at the hands of police. He says now that he never meant to be taken literally but understands why Nordies showed him the exit door. An American Airlines flight from South Korea to Dallas encountered violent turbulence in a winter storm over the Pacific. Four passengers were injured; the plane diverted to Japan. The FCCs receiving complaints about network television showing closeups of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady dropping an unmistakeable series of F bombs during NFL games. Though no audio aired, one complainant says his six year old son knew exactly what was said. 70 years ago today, the War Department announced that loyal America citizens of Japanese ancestry would finally be allowed to return to their homes in Portland and elsewhere on the West Coast--after nearly three years of enforced absence in relocation centers. Today we celebrate a quarter of a century of The Simpsons. The Santas Little Helper episode aired on this date in 1989. Its the most moral family program on television, with the added benefit of countless Portland references emanating from creator Matt Groenigs roots as a Lincoln High graduate. I did a long interview with Groenig at a Portland premier event, and someday I will find that cassette. The Simpsons is a treasure amid a culture that generates much trash. Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol was published on this date in 1843. It took him two months to write it. And a quick thought: we all might want to consider leaving our porch lights on in the evening so our house addresses are visible. With Christmas Eve now one week away, and considering all of the online shopping being done, package deliveries are being made sometimes late in the evening. Ive helped two delivery people on our very dark road who were baffled by our house numbers; one was nearly in tears and badly needed a hug. So she got one. We all need to help each other, just like the critters in the video below. Have a very fine Wednesday, tune us in on 103.3 in Portland and the iHeartRadio app anywhere else in the world (pretty much)...check in with comments...and thank you!
