Greetings from the top of the world! Well, almost. With latitude of 69.73N, were close. While my friends in North America were asleep we were on our way to Kirkenes at northeastern edge of Norway. Not too cold when we arrived--about 27F--but it was pretty windy... and cloudy, so were hoping that changes soon. On the way to the hotel I checked out the gas prices--equivalent to about $8.16 per gallon. The Kirkenesians (is that a word?) figured out how to get around that, though. Being only a few miles from the Russian border, those with a Border Pass on their passports drive across the border and fill up in Russia which, as I understand it, has prices more similar to those in the U.S. Since were not boarding the ship for our trip southward, well likely spend the next two nights viewing the lights here at the hotel (weather permitting) because theres a fantastic view over the fjord to the north--as you can see out the windows of our dining room. Hmmm... looks like Ive got my viewing position staked out! This evening after dinner Ill be giving a presentation on viewing and shooting the lights; lets just hope the skies clear and we can put all my tips into practice!
