Greg, Donna and myself at Subway (of course) in Hartford, CT. - TopicsExpress

Greg, Donna and myself at Subway (of course) in Hartford, CT. Greg phoned this morning and, without him knowing, we decided to drive to find him. We talked for almost two hours as Donna drove, Greg not knowing we were coming his way. Our signal dropped about 20 minutes from his last known location. We thought wed head outbound from Hartford to look for him, but we were in the wrong lane to turn as the GPS was telling us. We turned the wrong way, saw a subway, and saw him sitting in the window his hands in his film tent (see earlier photo). When he was ready to go I walked about ten miles with him. Not so cold as we were walking, then not 200 yards out of Subway he decided to take a photo. And I got to see the long process involved, not the least of which is all the unpacking, assembling, disassembling and re packing ... For one photo! I looked under the hood to see the image on the ground glass, upside down and backward, the front and back of the camera adjusted to have the building standing dramatically upward and not leaning. Fascinating: But I was glad to start walking again to generate some heat! Greg talked a zillion words in three hours and I recognize the intellectual discussions that we do enjoy and to which we look forward. All sorts of topics about art and artists, photography, graduate school, careers, and Gregs very thoughtful perspectives on what appears to be just walking. As always what is so engaging for me is his capacity for abstract thought and discussion. He so ably and frequently shifts perspectives (maybe thats why he loves that field camera!). He can talk about a topic, and can talk about talking about that topic. And he can see and analyze how others talk about, and talk about talking about... Got that? Im serious. Thats why I think it matters less whether we are talking about art, religion, or meatball sandwiches: His capacity to step in and out of different perspectives keeps me thinking, has me feel more elevated above things. He has a gift that goes beyond the tool of photography, yet I expect his photographs will be an extension of himself. Donna found us up Route 44, handed him a cup of hot coffee, gave him a hug and off he went alone up the road. He will reach Grandparents tomorrow.
