Greg Glassman set out to build an effective gym. The formula: Combine the single-sport movements of a cross-section of the worlds most impressive athletes with a clock, a whiteboard, and a dedicated trainer. Teach a simple nutrition program based solely on results. In building his gym (the original CrossFit on Research Dr. in Santa Cruz, CA) he stumbled on a business model, and in a stroke of inspiration, added a singular insight, borne of Silicon Valleys contrarian programmers ethos: The business model: Keep the overhead low and the tuition high. The insight: Maintain low barriers to entry. Allow open-source access to the code. The result: a self-replicating, self-sustaining community, set to repeat. The whole thing went viral. The lesson is simple: You never know what will happen when you set out to do something new, and the first step rarely predicts the end result. Go start something.
