Greg, today was the best, miserable 20 miles ever. I woke up with a severe head cold so I bailed on the Capitol Run. I dragged myself out at 8:30 and told myself to run smart. I had no intention of doing 20 miles. I slogged along at the start. Strangely, I was only 40 seconds off my marathon pace. And I kept going at that pace for 15 miles. But by 16 I was slowing down to almost 2 min off marathon pace. Then my son called and he needed me to pick him up in 40 minutes. I still had 3.5 miles to get home and the only way to get there in time was to do 10:00/mi. And I did it! I actually was doing 9:50/mi the last 3.5 miles. Where the heck did that come from? At 16 miles, I was so tired. What I learned about myself is the difference between convincing myself that Im tired and actually being tired. Also, those stretches you showed me are great. My thigh muscle held up really well. A little sore but much better than the past month. I am so ready for the marathon. Im now off to drink some Emergen-C and see if I can shake off this head cold.
