Gregory of Nyssa? One of my favourites. After suffering great loss he discovered that God was not so much an object to be understood as a mystery to be loved. We seem to suffer from the misconception that God is there for us but the fact is that we are there for God. Only after we get that can we realise how it is that God of his own infinite love is prepared to be there for us. Putting someone else, let alone God, at the centre of our life is totally counter-cultural and anti-intuitive, so its no wonder that we keep getting this wrong. Perhaps suffering is the only thing that, like Gregory, turns our world around sufficiently to see that we are not, after all at the centre - but we are loved to bits by the one who is.
