Grey Squirrel, Jonathan Pointer, Graphite on Art board, 29.7 X 42cms A couple of months ago I was asked to draw a Grey Squirrel by a new client in Germany. Her daughter lives in the UK and when she visits her daughter they like to walk in the local park and love watching the antics of the grey Squirrels. I was particularly pleased to draw this animal as it is one that I would not have taken the risk on to draw for myself. In the UK Grey Squirrels (which come from America) were introduced at the the end of the 19th century along with many other exotic species of bird and mammal. Our native Red squirrel is a much smaller animal and perhaps the two species could have lived harmoniously if it wasnt for the fatal Squirrel pox that the Greys carried and passed on to the native Reds. Now Grey Squirrels are the common squirrel in the UK with the Reds much reduced to small localities and pockets. So Grey Squirrels, whilst attractive animals, are not loved in the UK. Ive drawn many Red squirrels before but really did not think I could ever sell a Grey should I have ever drawn one. It was nice to have a waiting client for this one and I enjoyed drawing an animal that I never thought I would be able to.
