Griffins win 21-6 and are going to the Championship! The Griffins went into the Burnaby Lakes Sports Complex this evening as the 4th seed in the Tier II playoffs this evening and beat the 1st seed Burnaby Central Wildcats. The game started with the Griffins receiving the ball and establishing their ground game early. Shahryar Khan and Kevin Jeong shared the running back duties on this drive and all game running like men possessed. The offensive line opened up huge gaps and both RBs did a great job of seeing the field and making the right cuts. The first drive was capped off by Alex Parrotta keeping the ball and running in from 35yards out and the games first score. The Griffins defence looked really good early on, forcing the Wildcats to punt early and often. Parrotta would score again early in the 2nd quarter, this time following his lineman directly to the end zone on a QB sneak. The final score of the half came from special teams when Reygin Acayayan blocked a punt that resulted in a safety. The defence played well, swarming ball carriers and chasing down passes, but had some missed opportunities, dropping a couple of would-be interceptions. The offence also struggled with ball possession, having trouble to hanging onto the ball throughout the game. Fast forward to the second half and the Griffins find themselves ahead 14-6 and the game still very much in the air before the Griffins special teams take matters in their own hands again. Sam Malana fielded a Wildcats punt on his own 13yard line and after a couple nifty moves and a great block from Quentin Milner, he took it to the house to the tune of an 87yard punt return touchdown. That touchdown was capped off by a successful PAT from Peter Bundic. That single point would prove to be the last score of the game. The Wildcats had a couple late chances, but the Griffins defence held strong. Griffins game rock was Sam Malana. In addition to the punt return TD, Malana also had 2 receptions for 50yds, 3 kickoff returns for 63yards and a total of 109yards on 3 punt returns. Sam was also rock solid on defence, knocking down passes and would be receivers in addition to making a couple key tackles. He really did a little bit of everything today. Other notable performances: Alex Parrotta was 3 for 8 for 59yards, had over 120yards off 15 carries and added 3 defensive tackles. Reygin Acayayan added another INT today and chipped in with 3 tackles to go along with the blocked punt. Shahryar Khan (105yards on 22 carries), Kevin Jeong (47yards on 11 carries), along its Parrotta combined for over 250 yards rushing. HUGE SHOUT OUT TO THE OFFENSIVE LINE!!! Interceptions were also registered by Zac Parrotta and Shahryar Khan. 2 firsts for the team tonight: first playoff victory, first successful PAT (Peter Bundic). All around team effort that led to a solid effort and a great result for the Griffins. Next Griffins action: Tier II Championship game in Friday, November 21st @ 8:30pm at Burnaby Lakes Sports Club.
