Groceries arent the only thing to check expiration dates for. - TopicsExpress

Groceries arent the only thing to check expiration dates for. Dont forget to chuck out old beauty products as well! There are no international standards for marking the expiration date, so the markings are different in Europe and in North America. If you dont see something like Exp 12/2015, then look for PAO date Period After Opening, which may look like this, 24M. Sometimes, the shelf life is noted by a special (undecipherable) batch code printed on the container. You can look up these codes for major brands at CheckCosmetic.net. All that said, the PAO dates dont take into account how the consumer uses the product or how it is stored. The fact is that once opened, your products clock is ticking because the more its exposed to light, air, and bacteria, the more quickly it will degrade. Here is what you should know about the expiration of makeup: Makeup expires more quickly in countries or states with a tropical climate. If you want your cosmetics to last longer, then do not store them in the bathroom where there is moisture. Keep them in a cool dry place, preferably in a zip-lock bag outside the reach of oxygen, and do not use them with wet or dirty hands. Avoid using products (no matter how much pretty packaging may lure you in) that comes in jars, or use a mini-spatula sanitized after every use, so you dont risk contaminating the product. In my opinion, mascara is make-up product to be the most strict about changing. This is a product based on water, so it is a breeding ground for bacteria, which means that your mascara can go bad long before its 3 months are up. Check out these guidelines for the shelf life of your beauty products and see if youve got some spring cleaning to do in your bathroom this weekend. :)
