“Grooming Day” (Life with dogs celebrated in Verse) Explosion of excitement—groomers are here. Our dogs love them so. Sprinter van enters driveway—slow, reverse gear. All four pooches let go. They all vie to be first—gets a bit fierce. Today, Rocky and Kori won. Samson and Sookie wait—anguished barks pierce The morning calm. Such fun. In the end, all will be fine—washed, groomed and primped, And smelling sweetly too. Probably “pumpkin spice”—no season to skimp On any timely frou-frou. The dogs will look show-worthy—yeah. Right. As if. Not a “ring dog” in the lot, Just beloved, pampered family pets—we pay a stiff Fee to maximize what they’ve got. But what they’ve really got is us—dutiful ”’rents.” We love them. They’re worth it. And once we’ve paid up—money well spent— We’ll hold them close and sit With them on nearest couch—space is the thing. We’ll pause, calm, hearts light. We might linger quite long—just slowly wring Out the warmth until “goodnight.” And even then, it doesn’t end at all. They’ll sleep with us until the first light calls. © Verse-Case Scenario, LLC 2014 ------ For a few days, Samson, Sookie, Rockwell and Korina will smell like whatever doggie perfume is spritzed on them. Then, for the better part of a month, they’ll smell like dogs. At last, just before the next grooming date, they’ll smell like dirty dogs and we’ll count the days until “Shaggy To Chic” rolls into the drive again. It’s yet another “circle of life.” Elton John should write a song about it. We are most fortunate that the groomers have, in fact, totally enraptured our dogs with love and anticipation. It would be sheer hell if our pack hated their grooming sessions. Otherwise… our CSA season is winding down but we still have a distribution of veggies today. Pick-up will be accomplished sometime between 2p and 7p. I usually go early, but there are other factors today. Like maybe a movie. Not sure which one. The new Keanu Reeves, perhaps; I understand it’s one of the desirable “needles” in Keanu’s haystack of really crap movies. Then, there’s “Fury,” recipient of lukewarm reviews but apparently gargantuan box. And, of course, having not yet seen it: “Gone Girl,” which the critics love but about which I cannot get myself to warm. Still haven’t seen “The Skeleton Twins” (Wiig/Hader) either, but we’ll have to go to H-burg to see that. Oh, bother. I should stick to birdwatching. Seed is the only cost of admission.
