Groot Steel (Pty) Ltd (previously known as "Otavi Steel") is being developed in multiple locations in Namibia. The Groot Steel Nanomill, a scrap metal-based melt shop with an annual gross capacity of 300,000 tpa of rebars and billets is being developed in Usakos, Namibia and is scheduled for commissioning by mid 2015. Other different iron ore-based melt shops in a range of 2.5 million tpa capacity, to focus on producing a varied of steel products such as HRC, CRC, Stainless Steel, etc., will be developed upon the commissioning of the Nanomill in four different locations in Namibia; Usakos, Outjo, Otavi, and Grootfontein. Budgeted at more than US$3 billion for the development, the Groot Steel Mill is expected to have an annual gross production capacity of 10 million metric tons of steel for the automotive, construction, household appliances and packaging customers in Namibia and around the world. Groot Steel expects to create 23,500 direct jobs and more than 117,500 indirect new jobs throughout Namibia. The Groot Steel Nanomill will employ 859 production staff with more than 5,000 indirect new jobs in Usakos.
