Grotensohn Tour: Day 1 Matjiesfontein was founded in 1884 by legendary Scottish railwayman James Logan. He established the village as a fashionable spa that is now well known for its splendid historical buildings and a sense of peace and timelessness that is rare. In 1975 the entire village was preserved as a National Heritage Site under the direction of revered hotelier David Rawdon. Matjiesfontein is also a feast for the imagination with a colourful history that includes international cricketers, Olive Schreiners residency, Cape command headquarters during the Anglo Boer War (South African War) and controversial war crimes hearings. The village on the N1 highway is indeed a great country getaway where pure relaxation is enjoyed for a weekend or stopover on your way to Cape Town.
