Group faults Maku on ASUU strike The Education Rights Campaign has said it will not be bothered if the Federal Government has to shut down in order to fund the education sector. ERC was reacting to a comment credited to the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, in Abuja on Wednesday that government would shut down if all the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities were met. The group said on Friday, ‘‘Our simple response is: government can shut down if it must. It would simply be good riddance to bad rubbish. If this government could spend over N3trn between 2009 and now to bail out failed banks and did not shut down; if this government could spend over $1bn (N163bn) to buy over warlords and militants from Niger Delta under a fraudulent amnesty programme and yet did not go bankrupt, then we fail to see the wisdom in Maku’s claim that spending N500bn annually on university education would sink the ship of the current government.’’ The group, through its National Coordinator, Mr. Taiwo Hassan, said the minister had tried to use the excuse of spending on the war against Boko Haram, to justify government lack of focus on public education. According to him, the most reliable antidote to ethno-religious conflicts in Nigeria is to expand social services through increasing government investment in public education and job creation. ‘‘The virulent corruption and anti-poor policies of this clueless capitalist government have become so unbearable to the working masses and poor Nigerians that this current administration should have been consigned to the dustbin of history a long time ago,’’ Hassan said
