Groupie Doll by hsw Resembling Deputy Minister, in action and will and Pleasant Colony in mannerisms the champion filly sprinter in America is Groupie Doll- successful in defending her championship belt on a track she enjoys running on- Santa Anita- bravely she held off some stiff opposition after having to break from an outside post- within the blink of an eye, she was right there with the leaders after a brazen 44 second half mile! give or take a tick or two- just who might this wonder mare be?- her paperwork states she is by Bowman’s Band x Deputy Doll x Silver Deputy- her dosage formula reads 4-5-10-1-0 and she stems from one of the more storied families in thoroughbred history, descending in modern times from Mahmoud’s daughter Boudoir- pedigree buffs who have spent evenings relaxing over the pedigree pages of superior gelding Kelso, are well aware of Boudoir, and her many classy children, grand children etc. nut among the blue ribbons one stands out “the magnificent cripple” Your Host, sire of Kelso who was foaled in 1957- The story of Your Host, is one of sustained hope, belief, & the miracles of then modern equine medicine, and the hard work and trust Your Host, had in his human connections and friends, for this terrific colt shattered a leg as bad as could be shattered- with the lethal injection eyeballed by this fine son of Alibhai - the courageous thoroughbred refused to be administered the death potion, and began a long and fantastic struggle to retain his life- that Your Host, lived to sire the great Kelso, five tie horse of the Year, is truly remarkable- his injury’s were a badly broken foreleg and shoulder- in almost all cases in that era catastrophic wounds- so profound were his injuries he was purchased by his insurer Lloyds of London, the firm who paid the vet bills until Your Host, recovered went to stand stud!! It is from the family of Boudoir, that Groupie Doll, emanates from- thru a half sister to Your Host, the famed broodmare Flower Bed, dam to Brambles, and Floral Park, but most importantly Flower Bowl, a champion later dam to the magnificent trio of Graustark, his full brother His Majesty, and their half sister by slop star Sailor- Bowl of Flowers, a champion- thusly Groupie Doll, is from a very high performing family- with both Graustark and His Majesty, reaching the exalted status of chef-de-races overall the family is known as 4-D- interestingly and to point out the fierce competition between the racing families, I can say with some confidence no 4-D runner has ever reached the winners circle of the Vosburgh nor has one succeeded in the Tom Fool Stakes nor can I recollect one which was victorious in the Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship which Fort Larned (9-g) won in 2013 perhaps the reason for this oddity is that the preceding races are 7 furlong events while at six furlongs 1 4-D runner who comes into focus is 2005 Colin Stakes winner up north, Edenworld, who was a son of Southern Halo- but pound for pound the 4-D clan is by no means equal to its sister group of 4-M or 4-K -but it is potent enough, and has sent forward Groupie Doll- a champion. Mayer, the movie studio king and racing activist- Beau Pere, was also the dam sire of Swaps, considered by many unquestionably the greatest horse who ever raced- As far as inbreeding in Groupie Doll’s five generation print-out there are 3 obvious crosses to Northern Dancer, and they occur thru sons, the highly underrated Dixieland Band- Vice Regent, and Northern Dancer’s best racing son Nijinsky, who won the English Triple Crown in 1970 and is the last to have performed that arduous task to completion-= breeding fans will note that the 4-d family has been invoked both on the sire and dam side of the pedigree equation with Flower Bed, appearing as 5th dam to Groupie Doll and Flower Bowl the daughter of Flower Bed, appearing in sire Bowman’s Band’ paperwork- so in essence the full sisters Flower Bowl and Floral Park are integrated in Groupie Doll’s cosmology 5x4! If we examine the 4th generation of Groupie Doll, the hard hitting studs of superior sprinting predilections appear- Mr. Prospector & Vice Regent and Turn-To and Bold Favorite the latter carried his speed to victory in the Illinois Derby of 1968- other sprinting dervishes in the genetic garb of Groupie Doll, are Delta Judge & tireless Swoons Son & Royal Charger, conspicuous in his 5th generation positioning, he is crossed to Swaps, in the production of Best Turn, who may be the pivot of this pedigree- perhaps least understood within in the excellence of Groupie Doll is her sire Bowman’s Band, who was boldly inbred to Northern Dancer 2x4 -but a closer look to Bowman’s Band, reveals him to be of family 23-B via his very top notch 3rd dam Chris Evert, winner of the NYRA filly triple crown in 1974 - Chris Evert, was all heart and class, and raced Holding Pattern & Little Current to noses in the typhoon Travers Stakes at Saratoga 1974 -where the rain came down in a glass like sheet throughout the race which was one of the greatest contests, if not the most exciting race I ever saw- Bowman’s Band was hearty and classy enough to place in the best mile race in North America - the Met Mile at Belmont Park in 2004 at age six- I am always interested in who a champion mare (or any mare for that matter) might be bred to among those in current practice- It would be fun if we could insert Groupie Doll, into a time machine and race her in the 1985 Breeders Cup sprint -which featured such cracks as Precisionist and Smile, & Fighting Fit and Pancho Villa & Ziggy’s Boy- how would she have done against those buzz saws?- A good gamble in breeding Groupie Doll when her combat days are over might be a spin of the bottle with Speightstown - the gentle reader may consider this breeding formulary which plainly from my point of view brings to Groupie Doll, the very hot blood of Gone West - regal Buckpasser, would be imported into the gene pool of the Groupie Doll foal- as well- plus the Storm Bird/ Storm Cat, configuration would join the resident Northern Dancer lines within Groupie Doll namely Vice Regent & Nijinsky & Dixieland Band- should the sprint champ be bred to the above- Harry S watnik @2013
