Grout can be found in most homes and can be cleaned with ease. While there are a wide variety of retail products that clean grout surfaces, these items can be expensive. Instead consider making your own homemade cleaning solution that will effectively clean grout surfaces without damaging the grout or emptying your wallet Baking Soda Baking soda is an inexpensive element that works to clean and deodorize. Mix a solution of two cups water, one cup baking soda, and 10 drops liquid dish detergent in a spray bottle. Spray directly onto the grout, and scrub away with a sponge or soft cloth. For more set-in dirt and grime, let the solution sit on the surface for 5 to 10 minutes, then scrub. The dish detergent will work as an adhesive that will stick to the surface but also clean and create a streak-free shine for surrounding areas of tile. Vinegar Vinegar works to clean, disinfect, and deodorize, making this the perfect solution for areas of grout in the kitchen and bathroom. Mix a solution of two cups water and one cup distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray directly onto the grout, and wipe away with a damp sponge or cloth. Rinse when finished to remove any additional vinegar residue, and you will be left with clean grout that is free of bacteria or odor. This works especially well for bathroom areas that frequently experience mildew buildup. Ammonia Ammonia is another inexpensive element that will clean grout without damaging the surface. Mix a solution of two cups water and one-half cup non-sudsing ammonia in a spray bottle. Spray onto the grout, and wipe clean with a damp sponge or cloth. Rinse when finished to remove any additional dirt or ammonia residue, and you will be left with a clean, disinfected grout surface. Bleach Bleach is a strong ingredient that works well to clean mold and mildew that has formed on grouted surfaces. Mix a solution of two cups water and one-half cup chlorinated bleach in a spray bottle. Spray onto the surface, and wipe clean with a damp cloth or sponge. Rinse the area to remove any leftover residue, and repeat as necessary until all signs of mold and mildew have diminished.
