Growing up I had parents who occupied two ends of a spectrum. On - TopicsExpress

Growing up I had parents who occupied two ends of a spectrum. On one end was my father, who was convinced that the world was going to hell in a hand basket, that anything that had not been invented before he was born was useless junk, and that kids today were just getting worse and worse, enabled by their lazy parents who just wouldnt take the time and effort to apply time-tested liberal doses of corporal punishment so that they would straighten up and fly right. On the other end was my mother who excitedly bought a color TV and outdoor antenna to pull in faraway stations, and then snatched up cable TV when it became available, cried when the Apollo astronauts landed on the moon, and was happy that her oldest child was 17 years older than her youngest because she thought that kids were getting smarter and smarter and she enjoyed her contact with them. Last night I got reminded just how much I am my mothers son. After I finished my lecture nearly a dozen of my students came up to ask questions about their last paper assignment, about the lecture I had just given, and the law in general. The cool thing is that the questions were more insightful than those I would have asked at the same age. Its the end of the semester so a lot of them are understandably a bit behind on their reading (getting papers done, etc, takes priority - I figured that out my first semester teaching!), but they had taken full advantage of Google to look up various things that intrigued them about contract law and then wanted to ask if they were understanding the concepts correctly. And some were even applying those concepts to their own work lives. Dont waste your time telling me how awful kids today are. I love being around them and am jealous of how much brighter they are than I was at the same age. And Im not that humble; I think I was pretty smart!
