Growing up, most everyone walked to school, unless they rode a bike. From Malibu Dr. near the airport, I walked or biked to Jefferson, Sierra and Ramona. Being chauffeured was rare. Today, one of the chief traffic cloggers & smog inducers is the line of cars around schools every weekday morning and afternoon doing drop-offs and pick-ups. There is no proof that Riverside is more dangerous today than then. We certainly have many more people per capita incarcerated than the 50s-60s. The streets of Riverside are not war zones. They are actually pretty clean, tidy, and friendly. There is no evidence of rampant crime. Sure, an isolated tragedy can always be identified. If parents are so concerned about safety, they could always walk with their kids, and neighbor kids in a walking train. Its easier on the environment, better for everyones health, and eases the expenses Riverside incurs trying to mitigate the ever-increasing traffic. Having walked the sidewalks of most of Riverside myself, then and now, -compared to other cities, both larger and smaller? Its Candyland. So why cant todays kids walk to schools, just as we did?
