Growing up, my baby sister spent much of her 12 short years of life fighting. Whether it was fighting to be a normal kid in school (despite her chubby prednisone cheeks or her peach fuzzy head) or fighting off a common cold we all take for granted (until you learn what neutropenia is and how it can turn a common cold into a killer pneumonia.) she didnt make the choice to be sick. She didnt choose to sport the catheter in her chest that,no matter how hard she tried, connected her to her illness. She didnt have much choice about anything in her short life but the choices she made for herself defined who she was. From the day at the swimming pool and the unkind kid who,if I remember correctly, managed to convince all the children in the Olympic sized pool that the cancer would leak from her skinned knee and make them all sick. She chose to laugh, point her skinned knee in their direction then invite those of us who knew better to enjoy the empty pool. Or the 2 times she relapsed and chose to live...or the 3rd time when she chose not to fight. She may not have been around long enough in life to write a book,or have her own reality show (God knows she had the personality for it)she wasnt my big sister..I didnt follow her around in admiration but she was the source of a most important lesson I try to live everyday and especially in my journey as a mother. Our choices may not always be everything we dreamed of. We will surely be dealt less than perfect cards in life but we always have a choice. We choose to keep on or give up. We can choose to fight or go peacefully. We can live quietly or make a beautifully bright and brilliant noise on our way out. To my baby sister, thank you for painting my life with colors I never knew existed. Thank you for existing in such brightness that even when you left this earth there was such an over abundance of light that the sun continued to shine. Thank you for being an influential woman in my life.
