Guam - The Guam Department of Education (“GDOE”) will be resuming classes at most of the island’s public schools on Monday September 23. After the heavy winds and rain caused a number of challenging situations at the schools last Thursday and Friday, crews have been working throughout the weekend to prepare for Monday. Superintendent Jon Fernandez has directed personnel from the schools to submit an assessment of all campuses. In turn the Facilities and Maintenance Division has been responding to the concerns at the schools to ensure they are safe and ready to receive students. “Our school personnel and our maintenance personnel have been at the schools getting the facilities ready for students on Monday,” said Fernandez. “At this time I expect almost all of our schools to open as planned.” Oceanview Middle School and Southern High School will not open tomorrow. Excessive flooding and leaking inside of the classrooms as well as fluctuating power and water have caused for the closures. “We will continue our efforts at both schools with the goal of getting the students back to school as soon as possible,” said Fernandez. Two schools, Merizo Martyrs Memorial School and MU Lujan Elementary school will be open until 12:00 noon tomorrow. Both schools are without full water restoration and will be utilizing emergency reserve tanks to operate on the modified schedule. GDOE has been in communication with personnel from the Guam Waterworks Authority, Guam Power Authority and the Department of Public Works getting updated information. While the information available at this time has enabled GDOE to make informed decisions, the next 12-15 hours could impact the schools that are expected to be open as scheduled. Updates will be provided as information is made available throughout the night and into the morning hours. “I expect our school leaders to be at the school sites early in the morning to determine if the school is prepared to receive students,” said Fernandez. “If there is any call for concern then we will address it when it comes in.” Closed 9-23-13: * Oceanview Middle School * Southern High School Early Release 9-23-13: - School to end at 12noon * Merizo Martyrs Memorials School * MU Lujan Elementary School Regular Operations: * All other GDOE schools
