Guangzhou AV Fair 2013. Report by Tasso, from Australia. The Show The overall standard of the show was very high. I noted that the sound quality from the demos was consistently good and it was a pleasure to step into each room. There were far less examples of miss-matched equipment like there was at the Aussie shows. This is most likely because most the exhibitors were not distributors of multiple brands who only demo what they sell. Amplifier manufacturers would choose suitable speakers for their demo and vice versa. Class Structure and Hifi In China ( and more so in Hong Kong) buying certain brands can be seen as gaining greater status. We see this a bit in Australia and even on this forum, but nowhere near to the same extent as over there. The shops that sell brands like Wilson, Gryphon, Pass Labs etc are large luxuriously decorated establishments. The staff I saw all wore suits and were impeccably trained. You really feel special, yet not pressured when entering their store. So the HIFi/Brand/status thing seems part of a greater luxury experience that these stores provide. By contrast, the average hifi shop is small and plain by comparison ( very low overheads). They are also small by Australian standards but are stocked to the gunwales. While many wealthy Chinese people buy local products, gear made in the west including Australia are favourably looked upon. Foreign made goods can attract higher prices which also buys prestige. Even locally made goods claiming to be foreign seem to be able to do this. I cant think of any parallel analogies in Australia. The next photo of the backdrop to Melodys display will illustrate what I mean
