Guatemala Visit Flew into Guatemala, and grabbed a rental car. Three thoughts from experience: 1. In Guatemala City, there is a huge relief map of the entire nation. It’s an amazing piece of art. The map is carved in 3-D, is beautiful, and sits in the center of a public park. You climb a tall platform, to see the map from above. The relief really captures how mountainous Guatemala is. Would be cool to have such a map of California. 2. Lake Atitlan and and Antigua are beautiful. The Lake is difficult to get to, but worth the trip. Stunning. Antigua is like a tourist town in America – more visitors than natives. Cobblestone streets and picturesque churches. The surrounding mountains are epic. In Antigua, I actually passed a “Texas BBQ” place, and nearly tripped myself in shock. Salivated at the menu, but it wasn’t open during my point of contact. No time. Had to keep moving. Ate at some restaurant that wasn’t memorable, gastronomically grumpy. I might be the only person who goes to Guatemala and gets excited about Southern BBQ. 3. The most fun I had in Guatemala was driving the mountains. Barely a flat road anywhere. Everything was up, down, fast, slow, a ton of braking and oh so many curves. Tight grip, riding the gas pedal, glad I had raced NASCAR. I paced my rental car, for sure. Funny story: When I showed up at the hotel, the hostess started asking me questions about Bollywood. She nearly fainted when I told her I couldn’t name a Bollywood movie made in the past 10 years. I nearly fainted when she started singing Bollywood tunes in Hindi. Turns out, Bollywood is big in Guatemala. So, there you go. Countries left in Central America: 1 Countries left in North America: 13 Countries left in the World: 141 Mark, Arun, Jonathan, Stacey – You were right. Guatemala is beautiful). Hema and Bryan, add to your list.
