Guerrilla Dance Practice Days 89 and 90 A A little A little A little bit A little bit at a A little bit at a time. Last night at Dance, People, Dance! we started playing with an idea that I’ve had for how to work with video improvisationally. A reminder on background: Jenna Tico and I are working on a dance for camera with Catherine Bennett. To create dance on camera, set choreography is essential unless there are multiple simultaneous cameras each with a skilled operator. Change in angles and filming techniques make a huge difference when editing. In order to get these different versions of the same movement without such resources we do multiple takes. In order to do multiple takes, we need consistent movement. Hence the need for set choreography. SO… the structure I’ve been working with is simple. Start improvising, just one move, and then start again. Repeat, and add another move. Repeat, and add another move, and another move. If something gets forgotten, or just isn’t quite right yet, change it and do it again. Go only as long as the material is consistent. With video we could take this short dance again and again, and then drop it to start a fresh improvisation. Dancing with Jenna today, we found that we actually REMEMBERED these little sections. Some of them were lame, and we threw them out. Some of them were great, and we strung them together. We found depth, ease, and connection with this structure that we’ve been waiting for—it’s starting to flow! https://vimeo/107205631
