Guess what happens when minimum wage workers have zero access to paid sick days? You guessed it! They go to work sick – and that translates to a whole lot of sick sandwiches. The National Labor Relations Board ruled at the end of August that Jimmy Johns unlawfully fired six workers for advocating for paid sick days and ordered JJ to give them back their jobs. According to a union survey, “an average of two workers work while sick every day at the Minneapolis franchise of the chain because minimum-wage pay means workers can’t afford to take a day off.” We aren’t getting anywhere by leaving paid sick days policy up to individual businesses. It’s time for Washington to pass paid sick leave at the state level.
