He has been a Director of RightChoice Managed Care, Inc. since April 1994. He serves as the Chairman of Harbison Corp. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Harbison since September 1993. He served as the Chairman of the Board of G.D. Searle and Co., and NutraSweet Company. He served as a Director at Monsanto. He is a Supporter of the Scholars in Arts and Sciences program, and a Benefactor of the Earle and Suzanne Harbison Faculty Fellowship in Arts & Sciences. He is the Chairman of the Arts and Sciences National Council. He was the Chairman of the Municipal Theatre Association and St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association. He serves as a Director of Mutual of America, Washington University, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Automobile Club of Missouri, Harbour Group, and the National Law Center of George Washington University. He is a sustaining charter member of the Danforth Circle, Life Benefactors of the Eliot Society. He is a Trustee of Washington University. He is a recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award at Founders Day 1987 and received the prestigious William A. Jump Award for distinguished service to the United States government.
