Guidance or Delusion? - or, if Ayahuasca told you to jump off a bridge... Perhaps the most challenging thing about interacting with non-ordinary realms of awareness is being able to discern whether an insight is guidance from a higher source of knowledge, or whether its just our own personal will, our ego, convincing us that the idea is from something higher. Some of the stories that sadden me most are the tales of people leaving their spouse and children because Ayahuasca told them to. It is indeed important to do your homework and follow through on guidance you are given during ceremony. Call that person you havent spoken to, write that letter, finish that thing youve been avoiding, do that practice you learned that helps you be less anxious, start looking for a new job; however, if there will be negative consequences to yourself or those around you its important to take the time to consider carefully and not follow the medicine blindly. Most important is to not make any decisions during the peak experience. If you are not yet fully grounded in the days and weeks after, do not make any huge life changing decisions. The advice from spirit may indeed be the right path, but all decisions that turn your life upside down should be made from a calm, grounded, centred place. If you are excited, you are very likely ungrounded and still in a vulnerable state. Excitement is perhaps the trickiest form of vulnerability, because it feels great, making it harder to recognise. In martial arts, a lower centre of gravity is more stable and conversely the one who lets their centre of gravity get too high is more easily toppled. The point is that if the decision is dramatically life changing, it a really good idea to sit on this advice you have been given from spirit for some time before acting on it. If its truly your path, it will be your path in a few weeks or months too. Consider inviting spirit / your own subconscious to give you three clear signs, outside medicine space. If its truly your path, life will find a way to let you know (just be aware of apophenia and confirmation bias). Ive heard indigenous Australians say that when they want to know which way to go, they will simply sit and wait, for as long as it takes, and most importantly dont act unless it the path becomes completely clear. well i asked for clear guidance, and i didnt get a no doesnt cut it. - JD
