Guide to Identifying a Breast Problem It is recommended for all average risk women over the age of 40 to have regular #mammograms and #ultrasound, as these can detect lesions too small to be felt during breast examination. It has been shown that there is an improvement in breast cancer survival rates mainly through earlier detection of the disease. There is also an improved quality of life for patients undergoing less invasive surgical techniques. • Average risk women above the age of 40 should be screened every one to two years. Women who may be at higher risk, such as young women with family history of breast cancer, dense breast, genetic carriers, should have an additional breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan. • Women over the age of 20 should perform self breast examination at the same time every month, ideally after their menstrual period, as the breasts can naturally become lumpier throughout the menstrual cycle. Most lesions found in the breast are non cancerous (cysts, or fibroadenomas of the breast. However, if a ‘lump’ is found you should seek medical attention immediately so further investigations can be performed. #BreastCancerAwareness #GoPink
