Guide to Moth Trapping Part 1: ‘Sugaring for Moths’ is a great way to see these fantastic nocturnal creatures and whats more it is really easy and cheap to do: Mix ¼ pint of beer (stout works well), 500g dark brown sugar, and 250g dark treacle in a saucepan over a low heat. Paint the sticky solution on to a tree stump or fence post with a clean paintbrush (beware it will stay sticky for some days). Check regularly during the hours of darkness – you’ll be surprised what you find! Try replacing beer with wine and soak some rope in the solution then hang from a tree (this is known as wine roping) – also works well to attract moths that are not always attracted to light.
