Guiding sailors and protecting them from dangerous shoals, the Cana Island Lighthouse stands majestically above the treacherous waters of Lake Michigan in this colorful sunrise image. Located north of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin on an 8-acre island made accessible by a rocky causeway, this 89-foot steel clad lighthouse features a French made third order Fresnel lens which can be seen for 18 miles. Originally made of cream city brick, the tower quickly deteriorated as a result of fearce storms and harsh icy winters. Interestingly, the island was originally covered with very little soil. In the early 1900’s, top soil was hauled in using eight teams of horses. Six weeks later enough topsoil covered the rocks to plant grass. Today the island is covered with dense cedar trees, white birches, and other deciduous trees. doorcountyimages/cana-island-lighthouse-wisp-door-county/
