Guitarist James Thunderbird Harris died on this day in 1992 in St. Paul, MN.. Davis is known only to dedicated Blues fans, but he was one of the most promising Blues guitarists to emerge in the early 60s. He started his career as the opening act for Guitar Slim in the late fifties, a position he held for over two years untll Slim`s death. It was Guitar Slim who gave Davis his nickname after the two guitarists got into a drinking contest, and a wrestling match with Thunderbird wine, landed Davis in the hospital. Thunderbird recorded for The Duke label in the early 60s and then joined Soul singer Joe Tex`s band, followed by a stint with O.V. Wright. Davis dropped out of music in 1974 and settled in Louisiana, working at an animal shelter. Black Top Records tracked him down in 1989 and he eventually recorded his first full-length album Check Out Time. He died of a heart attack while on tour promoting the album in 1992. youtu.be/VrKzWGwbf2k
