Gulf World Received 50 cold stun turtles from New England Aquarium! Last night endangered Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles from the New England Aquarium were flown by the Coast Guard to Orlando, Florida for rehabilitation. Gulf World was selected by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to be one of the marine rehabilitation facilities. Last night, 50 animals were immediately transported from Orlando to Panama City Beach. In the upcoming weeks, Gulf World will continue rehabilitating these animals until NOAA/USFWS/FWCC identifies options for the animals to be released. Recently, approximately 700 sea turtles have stranded due to cold temperatures associated with the Northeast cold event. These animals are then brought in for treatment at local rehabilitation facilities, like the New England Aquarium. Due to the large amount of stranded turtles, the New England Aquarium does not have enough room because of limited housing. The strategy is to place as many animals as possible to relieve the immediate response area and create capacity for additional incoming turtles.
