Gunfight at High Noon: A lifetime ago, I lived in the little - TopicsExpress

Gunfight at High Noon: A lifetime ago, I lived in the little town of Trenton, Kentucky. There was a gentleman there who owned, and operated, a grocery store and a gentleman who co-owned, and operated, a Texaco service station directly across from one another on U.S. 41 highway, which runs right through the middle of Trenton. Both these gentlemen considered themselves quasi, tough-in-cheek, Quick-Draw artist with a six-gun. Both had impressive rigs, which included; western style, Colt .45 revolvers, hand-tooled holsters, boots and cowboy hats. One many Saturdays, at high noon, they would meet in the middle of U.S. 41, with their six-shooters loaded with blanks, and draw on one another. Sometimes a crowd of fifteen to twenty bystanders, and shoppers, would gather to witness the shootouts. Following the shootout, each of the gunslingers would solicit opinions from on-lookers as to who had won. The proceedings were halted once for a few weeks when the grocery store owner shot off a piece of his toe while practicing his quick draw in a mirror using live ammunition. The ritual was finally put to an end, when a Kentucky State Trooper, who lived in Trenton at the time, witnessed the demonstration and declared it a menace to society, and a disruption to thru traffic on U.S. 41 highway. So ended one of the only exciting events that existed in the sleepy little town of Trenton.
