Gurgaon gets its first ever door-to-door e-waste pick-up service A recent study conducted by ASSOCHAM (Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry)- ‘E-waste in India by 2015’ reveals NCR is set to become the worlds dumping capital for e-waste as it would generate an estimated 50,000 tonnes per annum by 2015. Considering this issue, dataserv APAC launched the first ever door-to-door e-waste pick-up service in Gurgaon, which is supported through toll free number, SMS and e-mail. The objective of the service is to encourage Gurgaon residents to dispose of their e-waste in an environmentally sound manner. Amit Sardana, MD, dataserv APAC, said, “India is a growing contributor to the e-waste generated across the globe. In Gurgaon, the situation is similar where the production of e-waste is likely to increase by over 300 percent by 2020. The city generates over 11,000 tonnes of e-waste every year, but owing to lack of awareness among electronic users, barely 10 percent is recycled. This initiative seeks to not only sensitize people about safe disposal of any e-waste generated but also bring professional disposal at their doorstep.” The residents can avail this service and get their waste collected by calling up the toll free number 1 800 208 28 28 or smsing WEEE to 58888 or e-mailing to [email protected]>. The key challenge the service aims to address is irresponsible disposal of e-waste through illegal operators or junk dealers, as it can cause serious environmental damage and lead to health hazards over time. “The biggest challenge in e-waste recycling is the gap between end-users and recyclers. The objective of the mobile van is to bridge this gap. With the launch of this service, end-of-life e-waste goes straight for proper recycling and will not end up with the informal sector,” Sardana said. Gurgaon RWAs pledged their support to the initiative by tying up with dataserv APAC to place e-waste drop boxes in their colonies to be serviced by dataserv’s free collection initiative. Recycling certificates and comprehensive reporting of e-waste processed will also be made available to users on request.
