Gurkha Combatives, coming soon -Khukri Nepal Army Combatives History Essay- Ralph Turner, MC, who served with the 3rd Queen Alexandras Own Gurkha Rifles in the First World War, wrote an epitaph for the Gurkhas: “Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had country more faithful friends than you.” The British appreciated the bravery of Gurkhas experiencing the awesome cutting edge of the Khukri while combating the Nepal Army in the western Nepal during the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816). The legendary of Gorkha soldier was born in this way. When this small peace of curved steel is in the grip of a Nepalese soldier, it becomes an incredibly menacing and miraculous weapon with which he has already demonstrated rare feats of bravery while facing the enemy in many battlefields. 2. The Gurkha Soldier and his Khukri are incomplete without one another. Together they have earned their name and fame, which can never to be forgotten. As per a Legend that was interpreted during a battle, a Gurkha soldier threw the khukri and when it severed the head of its enemy, it came back to the owner just like a boomerang. Uncannily, A khukri is shaped almost like a boomerang. Another legend has it that, once a khukri was drawn in battle, it had to taste the blood of an enemy- if not, the owner had to cut himself before returning it to its sheath.1 3. With its origins going back to ancient times, the Khukri is not only the national knife of Nepal but is also symbolic of the Nepalese Army soldier, a prized possession with which he has indelibly carved an identity for himself. Following the glorious tradition and the history of Nepal, Nepal Army has honored Khukri using its image in the Army Flag, rank insignia, Unit colors etc. Further more, Nepal Army has emphasized on carrying Khukri as side arms. Nepalese Army soldiers still carry Khukri with their immortalized the words, “It is better to die than to live a coward,” and their famous battle cry, “Ayo Gorkhali!” always strikes terror in the hearts of their quivering enemies, and brings reverence into the hearts of their allies. 4. Today, we talk much about unarmed combat and army combative. Of course, Unarmed Combat (UC) and Army Combative are the pre-requisites for the success of a close quarter battle (CQB). Whatever is the form of war and battle, it ultimately terminates with the close quarter battle and ultimate victory lies to those who use a well rehearsed army combative. Considering the historic and symbolic value of Khukri, this paper is mainly focused on highlighting the importance of Khukri as side arm and possibilities of utilizing this great weapon in Nepal Army combatives.
